Word Portraits Of F1 Legends

Acclaimed British artist Annemarie Wright has turned her talents to the World’s Greatest Motorsport. Her latest artworks capture racing legend, Ayrton Senna and reigning World Champion, Lewis Hamilton – constructed from intricately hand-written text quotes.

Annemarie created these new portraits because she was ‘inspired by the technology, glory and rivalry of Formula One’. Senna was the natural choice to start her F1 collection – she remembers watching the race on the day he died, whilst eating Sunday lunch, and says this had a big impact on her.

The Senna portrait is made up from the most notable quotes made about him by other F1 drivers and commentators – representing the vast legacy that he left behind. For example, this quote by Niki Lauda: ‘Senna was the greatest driver ever and when someone like him is killed you have to ask yourself what is the point of it all.’

Wright’s portrait of Lewis Hamilton, captures the British racing star in his typical track-side pose. Wright still manages to capture detail in the image – such as the reflection on his sunglasses. Even Hamilton’s necklace is intricately reproduced using a hand-written quote.

The portrait of Lewis, titled ‘Born to Race’, is constructed from quotes made by Hamilton himself, such as ‘You just need to be accepted for who you are and proud of who you are, and that is what I am trying to do’.

Wright is most famous for her controversial portrait of Tony Blair – which was made up of the names of fallen soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan – she has also penned Winston Churchill, actor Stephen Fry, and football stars including Alex Ferguson and Steven Gerrard.
