Sainz Jr confirms Caterham talks

Carlos Sainz Jr has confirmed that Red Bull have spoken with Caterham about securing him a race-seat this season.

Although Caterham have Kamui Kobayashi and Marcus Ericsson as their two drivers, reports earlier this week claimed that Sainz could replace one of the drivers before the season is over.

The rumours were strengthened by the link-up between Red Bull and Caterham with the reigning Champs supplying the backmarker outfit with gearboxes.

And although there has been no official word from either team, 19-year-old Sainz Jr, who is currently contesting the Renault 3.5 series, has confirmed that talks are taking place.

“Yes it is true that there have been talks but there is nothing confirmed,” he told Spanish daily AS.

“This does not change anything because my goal remains the same: to be with Toro Rosso in the future. If for that to happen I pass through Caterham then I will do so happily.

“It has been possible to race this year but Red Bull is the one who decides. They and Caterham must also benefit and reach an agreement.”

Should Sainz head to Caterham and then on to Toro Rosso, it would be akin to the path that Daniel Ricciardo, who started out with HRT, took to his Red Bull seat.

Asked whether he would be okay going to a small team as Ricciardo did, Sainz Jr insisted that any opportunity in Formula 1 would “help, no matter how good the team is.”

He added: “If they are considering me that is a good sign and shows that I’m doing things right.”
