Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz is confident his team can exceed expectations during the 2016 Formula 1 campaign, when it will hope to outperform Red Bull Racing.
Toro Rosso finished seventh in the Constructors’ Championship this year, three places behind their Red Bull rivals. However, Sainz and teammate Max Verstappen have shown tremendous potential this season and think they can build on that when the new campaign starts.
Critical to their plans is the help that will come from a more competitive engine.
“In theory, we should be ahead of Red Bull next season,” Sainz told Spanish journalists this week.
“The Ferrari engine has perhaps 50 or 60 more horsepower. For us that means between six and eight tenths of a second, while Red Bull was about half a second faster than us this season with the same engine,” explained Sainz.
He does acknowledge that it will not be a foregone conclusion for his team though, as Red Bull Racing are expected to make some improvements themselves. Whatever is achieved by Toro Rosso will have to be worked for.
“So in theory, we should be ahead. But I think Red Bull will have learned what their weaknesses are and they will also certainly have a better car in 2016,” added the Spaniard.
