Verizon IndyCar: Analyzing the 2016 Schedule

Scott Dixon at Texas, always a crowd pleaser.

Scott Dixon at Texas, always a crowd pleaser.

Just shy of two months removed from the conclusion of the 2015 season, the Verizon IndyCar Series has released its schedule for the 2016 campaign. While three races from the 2015 slate leave the scene, three new or returning events will take their places, setting up a 16-race season across North America. One major criticism of the 2015 season was its five-month length, to which the series has responded by stretching the season over a month longer, which leaves some large gaps previously hoped to be avoided, but will still provide a complex mix of ovals, road courses, and street courses.

The series will return to classic tracks Road America and Phoenix International Raceway, and adds a new street course in the Grand Prix of Boston, but lose races at NOLA Motorsports Park, Auto Club Speedway and the Milwaukee Mile. NOLA suffered a brutal weekend plagued by torrential rain and post-race financial issues led to its eventual demise, while a lack of a suitable date did Fontana in. Milwaukee was promoted by Andretti Sports Marketing from 2012-15, but an internal divide amongst the firm led to a lackluster promotional effort, and therefore a lackluster fan turnout on Sunday, and with no suitable promoter willing to step up, saw the oldest track in the world lose its premier event.

Below is an outline of each event on the 2016 Verizon IndyCar calendar.

March 13 – St. Petersburg

JPM in St. Petersburg. 2016 could very well be his year.

JPM in St. Petersburg. 2016 could very well be his year.STREET COURSE | 1.8-miles, 14 turns

STREET COURSE | 1.8-miles, 14 turns
2015 winner: Juan Pablo Montoya
In what has become a staple of the series schedule, “the world’s fastest spring break party” returns for the 13th time and on the earliest date since its first running in 2003. St. Pete features an airport runway front stretch combined with the winding streets and scenic waterfront of the western Florida city.

April 2 – Phoenix
OVAL | 1.0-miles, 4 turns
Last race winner: Sam Hornish Jr. (2005)
For the first time since 2010, IndyCar will have an oval race prior to the Indianapolis 500. After a decade-long hiatus, IndyCars will return to Phoenix International Raceway, a unique circuit initially built for open wheel racing. Since IndyCar’s last endeavor to the desert in 2005, the track received a NASCAR-ized facelift, adding progressive banking and smoothing out “The Dogleg” in the back straight. However, after several tests over the past few years, drivers and teams remain optimistic that the track will drive very similarly to past events.

April 17 – Long Beach

Ryan Hunter-Reay

Ryan Hunter-Reay

STREET COURSE | 1.9-miles, 11 turns
2015 winner: Scott Dixon

The most street race in North America, Long Beach will host its 42nd grand prix in mid-April. 2015 series champion Scott Dixon finally broke through to win last year’s event after eight previous starts with just one top ten.

April 24 – Barber Motorsports Park
ROAD COURSE | 2.38-miles, 15 turns
2015 winner: Josef Newgarden
Hard to believe it will be the seventh Grand Prix of Alabama in 2016. Known as one of the most aesthetically pleasing circuits in the world, Barber hosted a phenomenal race in 2015 which saw Josef Newgarden take home his maiden IndyCar victory and Graham Rahal kick off his run to what would be fourth in the championship.

May 14 – Grand Prix of Indianapolis
ROAD COURSE | 2.4-miles, 14 turns
2015 winner: Will Power
In what will be the third Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis, the series will look to kick off the 100th Month of May with an exciting GP. With a layout that was touted for providing great racing, the GP has yet to live up to expectations in terms of on-track product, but is sure to bring in a good crowd.

May 29 – 100th Indianapolis 500

The Indianapolis 500

The Indianapolis 500

OVAL | 2.5-miles, 4 turns
2015 winner: Juan Montoya
The 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 will be one of the biggest shows in the history of motorsports. Record crowds are to be expected, and if 2015’s show was any indication, it should be yet another for the ages.

June 4th/5th – Dual in Detroit
STREET COURSE | 2.3-miles, 14 turns
2015 winners: Carlos Muñoz (Race 1), Sebastien Bourdais (Race 2)

For the second straight year, Detroit will be the only doubleheader on the calendar, and with summer storms playing a factor on several occasions in the past, Belle Isle is often due for an atypical winner. In 2015, Carlos Muñoz earned his first win off strategy, and Sebastien Bourdais held off Takuma Sato to take home the win in Race 2.

June 11th – Texas Motor Speedway
OVAL | 1.5-miles, 4 turns
2015 winner: Scott Dixon
Touted as one of the most challenging races of the season, the high banks of Texas provide plenty of action, and recent aero and tire packages have made for a high speed battle of tire degradation. This race comes down to which team and driver combo can best handle the circumstances and the elements, as the Texas heat, even at night, can be quite tough.

June 26th – Road America
ROAD COURSE | 4.0-miles, 14 turns
Last race winner: Sebastien Bourdais (2007)
The long, long awaited return to America’s greatest road course will finally be quenched next summer as the series returns to Elkhart Lake for the first time in nine years. Teams tested at Road America in September, and drivers lauded the high speeds and pure driving the 4-mile mammoth of a track provides.

July 10th – Iowa Speedway
OVAL | 0.875-miles, 4 turns
2015 winner: Ryan Hunter-Reay
Will be a day race for the first time since 2013, but the bullring aims to provide the same fascinating racing it has year in and year out. The Iowa faithful have always supported this race well, will be interesting to see if a Sunday race affects that much.

July 17th – Toronto
STREET COURSE | 1.755-miles, 11 turns
2015 winner: Josef Newgarden
After a 2015 event in June for the Pan-American Games, Toronto returns to its usual mid-July date, but after hosting doubleheaders in 2013 and 2014, will not return to that format in 2016, as many expected. Still, that didn’t stop “the Indy” from putting on a fantastic show in 2015, one of the best street races in recent memory.

July 31 – Mid-Ohio
ROAD COURSE | 2.4-miles, 15 turns
2015 winner: Graham Rahal
Another classic IndyCar circuit, the winding Mid-Ohio is back for another round. In 2015, Graham Rahal used a bit of luck on a pit stop under yellow to get out front, then held off Just Wilson to pick up his second win of the year at the track he grew up at.

August 21st – Pocono Raceway
OVAL | 2.5-miles, 3 turns
2015 winner: Ryan Hunter-Reay
Overshadowed by the tragic accident that took the life of Justin Wilson in 2015, Pocono is yet another of a slew of brillant races from 2015. Pocono may have been the best race of all by its unpredictability and dozens of cars and drivers having a chance to win. While 2013 and 2014 races were rather bland, the slightly weaker tow of the 2015 aerokits actually made the racing at Pocono better, and put on one of the best superspeedway races ever.

September 4th – Boston
STREET COURSE | 2.5-miles, 10 turns
2015 winner: n/a, new race
Amid some local resistance and debate, the Grand Prix of Boston still appears set to kick off for the first time on Labor Day weekend in 2016. Utilizing the Seaport District and Convention Center, track designers boast several passing opportunities, a tunnel beneath a hotel, and a “unique” pit lane, which we will see come September.

September 18th – Sonoma
ROAD COURSE | 2.4-miles, 12 corners
2015 winner: Scott Dixon
Stepping a few weeks back and a few hours back, the GoPro Grand Prix will return as the season finale after an exceptional race in 2015 that saw Scott Dixon utilize double points to tie Juan Montoya and take the championship on tiebreaker. The 2016 edition will be a late afternoon race in California, meaning an early Sunday evening green flag for east coast viewers.
