Earlier this year at Michigan International Speedway Dale Earnhardt Jr. won for the first time in over four years but “Junior Nation” might not be confident of a repeat because a different tire will be used this time around.
Blistering tires cost several teams a better chance at a good finish and that has to be factored into this week’s picks. Also the Hendrick Motorsports teams took the tire test off to rest their team members after Indy. One team that took the test even more serious than the others was Roush Fenway Racing. Despite having some tire problems during the race Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle were strong finishing third and fourth. Both drivers will be running up front all week this time around.
NASCAR and Goodyear have a little insurance when it comes to the tires this weekend at Michigan. A cold front will push through before race day and temperatures will be a bit cooler than normal for this time of the year when the mercury can often hit the mid to upper 90s. Temperatures in the low to mid 70s will help keep tire issues to a minimum and NASCAR drivers should perform up to their usual past performances at MIS.
