Love the Pocono Triangle or Hate it – Fantasy Insight Pocono

Jeff Gordon

I have a love/hate relationship with Pocono Raceway. I love the fact this is a challenging track for the drivers but I hate that these races can sometimes drag on a bit too long. I love the fact this is a unique track and I hate the fact that traffic in and out of the track can be a pain in the neck. While I never want to see Pocono leave the NASCAR schedule I wonder why we need two races here so close apart.

When it comes to handicapping this race you have to look at the track rating with a little more care. Quite often these races turn into gas mileage affairs. Other times the pace of the race puts the outcome more in the hands of the drivers. This isn’t an oval and it certainly isn’t a road course but strategy used to both places as well as driver ability on both types of tracks comes into play at Pocono.

This week I also found a little gem of data hidden within the chafe. Jeff Gordon seems to be rounding into form with more consistent race results over the past five races. Nobody in NASCAR has won more races on a road course and Jeff Gordon is also strong at low banking/high speed race tracks. That combo platter makes Gordon my slight upset special to win this week as we go rovaling this weekend.

Good luck with your fantasy racing picks this week and don’t forget to send in your pick for “Whiteboard Fantasy Racing” this week for Pocono.

Monster Bites – Fantasy Insight Dover

Clint Bowyer

Racing at the “Monster Mile” can try a driver’s patience. You can be cruising along with a five-second lead but then a wreck in lapped traffic can end your day. Ask Mark Martin all about that sort of scenario. So handicapping a race at the “Monster Mile” is tough because bad things can happen to high rated drivers. Sometimes you have to go beyond the numbers to see who might have a golden horseshoe in their possession for good luck.

One part of the ratings equation that does come in handy here is the Consistency Factor. As weird as it sounds, guys seldom have two bad races in a row unless they are in a downtrend of performance. So analyzing the Consistency factor gives us an idea of the guys that are not at the top of their game and quite often those are the guys the “Monster” bites.

Good luck with your fantasy racing picks this week and don’t forget to send in your pick for “Whiteboard Fantasy Racing” this week for Dover.

Help Kris Martin Become NASCAR’s First Deaf Racer

Kris Martin was born to race!

Kris is following in his grandfather’s footsteps and is trying to race his way all the way to NASCAR. But Kris was born profoundly Deaf. Technology helps Kris hear his Crew Chief and Spotter so he can race safely but sponsors are not willing to take a chance on him…yet. Your help in funding his racing this season can help Kris show sponsors he will be an excellent representative for them all the way to NASCAR. I am working with Kris Martin Racing and his family to help them make this dream come true.

Earnhardt Rigged This Roulette Wheel – Fantasy Insight Talladega 1

Dale Earnhardt, JR

Every time the NASCAR Sprint Cup circus heads to Talladega Superspeedway we hear about how this race is a crap shoot, a flip of the coin or a spin of the old roulette wheel. People make this sound so unpredictable.

Oh sure, there are big crashes that sometimes take out the top guys and let a longshot win the race. But for every longshot winner there is a solid pick. If this race was such a crap shoot or a spin of the roulette wheel how did Dale Earnhardt win ten times? How did Dale Jr win four in a row? Maybe the Earnhardt family rigged this roulette wheel.

One thing that has made this race a little more unpredictable this year is the unknown over whether the two-car push will work at all here. Earlier this season at Daytona the restrictive rules and a change to the front end of these Gen Six cars seemed to make the two-car tandem difficult to pull off for any length of time.

But this is Talladega where the transitions in the corners are not as severe. This is Talladega where the tires don’t wear as bad as Daytona. My gut feeling is that we will see pack racing until the closing laps and then we will see a few guys figure out how to make the two-car push work. But if tandem racing goes away we might see a return of Earnhardt dominance of this roulette wheel. (And since Lori Munro from Doin’ Donuts on RaceTalkRadio.com has picked Junior this week include him on your race team).

Good luck with your fantasy racing picks this week and don’t forget to send in your pick for “Whiteboard Fantasy Racing” this week for Talladega.

Fantasy Racers Need a Durometer Rating – Fantasy Insight Richmond 1

Kasey Kahne

In any form of race handicapping you can be overwhelmed with data. NASCAR’s loop statistics are a great example of having too much data. They rate so many different pieces of data that it is impossible to use it all.

How important is “Average Race Position” when it comes to handicapping? Some drivers are great at sneaking up on the competition late in the race because their Crew Chief is always making the car better as the race unfolds. Should we factor in the number of “Green Flag Passes” or what they define as “Quality Passes”?

While every piece of this data has its use the end result is what we are really looking for at the end of the day. Power Ratings use an algorithm that minimizes a “Bad Luck Day” while maximizing data from a large enough sample size to factor out the “Good Luck” finishes.  But one piece of data I wish we had more of is durometer data.

What is a durometer?

A durometer measures the hardness of objects including tires. Last week at Kansas Speedway I wish I had checked the hardness of the tires because one driver has a horrible record on hard tires. While Dorothy wanted to get home to Kansas you can be sure that Kyle Busch would love to never go there again. This has not been a great track for Busch over the years but he does even worse when hard tires are used at this track. If you dig through the tire notes on JAYSKI along with good note taking from races you can see that on intermediate speedways Busch struggles when harder tire compounds are in use. This week at Richmond the same tire codes will be used this weekend as NASCAR teams used over the last two seasons. If you look at the last four races worth of data from Richmond the top five drivers active this week are Busch, Tony Stewart, Carl Edwards, Clint Bowyer and Mark Martin. I don’t trust Tony Stewart based on the current form this season but the other guys are strong picks this week based on the durometer.

Good luck with your fantasy racing picks this week and don’t forget to send in your pick for “Whiteboard Fantasy Racing” this week for Richmond Speedway.

Not The Old Kansas Any More – Fantasy Insight Kansas

When this track opened in 2001 it was very fast and rather flat leading to mainly single file racing. The race was held in September and the temperatures were often very warm leading to a slick track too. Last year the new repaved track threw teams curveballs. But now Kansas Speedway has added a new casino and that has earned them a second race date, now placed in mid April.

Since Global Warming seems to be on vacation it might be a bit on the cool side which goes against all of the team’s notes at this track. A freshly repaved track, a new car, new tires and cooler weather let us know this isn’t the old Kansas any more.

This week I am a little more reluctant to put too much faith in the Horses for Courses rating due to all of the changes at Kansas. The track now has progressive banking which makes it very different from the type of track the rating describes. But even at repaved tracks the overall Power Ratings have proven to be very successful since they show which driver is coming into the event on a solid streak. The uncertainty over how different this track will race has me convinced to go with the overall Power Rating king and that is why I chose Jimmie Johnson this week.

Good luck with your fantasy racing picks this week and don’t forget to send in your pick for “Whiteboard Fantasy Racing” this week for Kansas Speedway.

Roushkateer or the Former Roushkateer – Fantasy Insight Texas

Matt Kenseth

Regular readers of Fantasy Insight know that I am a big believer in “Horses for Courses.” For those new to this feature this week that term simply means that certain drivers or teams perform better at certain tracks. When it comes to Texas Motor Speedway the drivers from Roush Racing have chalked up more than their fair share of wins. But this week I have to go against the conventional wisdom and pick a Toyota guy.

Matt Kenseth is coming into this race hotter than a Texas wildfire. His Horses for Courses rating is a near perfect 97. My only concern is whether the Toyota engines will show some fatigue on this super fast track over the course of 500 miles. That is why the smart fantasy handicapper will balance his or her lineup with some guys in Ford and Hendrick Chevy rides this week.

Good luck with your fantasy racing picks this week and don’t forget to send in your pick for “Whiteboard Fantasy Racing” this week for Texas Motor Speedway.

Can Earnhardt Hear Chimes? – Fantasy Insight Martinsville

Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

NASCAR’s most unique trophy is the prize for all of the winners at Martinsville Speedway…a grandfather clock. Can you imagine how loud it gets at Noon at Richard Petty’s house? The King has won fifteen times at Martinsville so it gets good and loud at the King’s Castle. This year I think NASCAR’s Top Dog will bring home his first Martinsville Clock this weekend.

Dale Earnhardt Jr fits the bill as the perfect choice to grab a mild upset this week at the track they affectionately call the “Paper Clip.” Sure Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon have seven wins and are the more obvious choices but let’s look inside the numbers.

Junior is the hottest driver in the series going to Martinsville as the only guy to open the season with five straight top tens. Only Johnson has more points in the last five Martinsville races than Junior, among active drivers. Junior also has a strong Track Type rating which concludes the trilogy of reasons to pick him this week.

Good luck with your fantasy racing picks this week and don’t forget to send in your pick for “Whiteboard Fantasy Racing” this week for Martinsville Speedway.

Best Test for Gen Six-Fantasy Insight California Speedway

Dale Earnhardt Jr.

NASCAR fans have heard so much from NASCAR PR about how great the new Gen Six car will be this year on speedways. Well folks, this is the ultimate test of the hype. In the past few years at California Speedway and tracks of this type there has been a big problem with drivers being able to gain huge amounts of ground until they get close to pass. Then that dreaded aero tight condition comes into play and we see the race come down to fuel mileage and track position strategy. This is the best test so far of the Gen Six.

Because I am not sure if NASCAR media types fall under the jurisdiction of Section 12-1-A in the NASCAR rulebook I must tread carefully here when I talk about the new Gen Six car. (OK, so I am only kidding) The car looks great and eventually it will be one heck of a great race car for NASCAR drivers. How can I say this with such certainty? Because the Gen Five car which handled like a tank at first went on to be a useful race car that gave us good racing last season. But my fear is that NASCAR is looking at the wrong place when it comes to better competition. Maybe they need to look at the rubber holding these cars up. Softer compounds might be the answer.

When it comes to handicapping this week’s race you can assume the Gen Six car is going to handle much the same on this flat fast speedway. Jimmie Johnson’s record here is nothing short of amazing. But if you are looking for a few upset specials look no further than Clint Bowyer and Mark Martin. This track is a sister track to Michigan International Speedway where Martin has been great over the years. Clint Bowyer’s “Horses for Courses” and “Track Type” ratings are fantastic and when you can get an overall Power Rating over 270 at high odds you need to run not walk to the betting window.

Good luck with your fantasy racing picks this week and don’t forget to send in your pick for “Whiteboard Fantasy Racing” this week for California Speedway.

Are You Feeling Lucky – Fantasy Insight Bristol

Kyle Busch

There are two distinct strategies when it comes to handicapping races in horse racing and the same applies to NASCAR races too. The first system is the easy one you simply pick the driver who has the best past performances and is coming into the current race in good form. This will yield lots of success when it comes to winners but usually at lower odds.

The second strategy is more of a value betting scheme by looking for the hidden gems in the past performances and exploiting those before the general public notices them.

This week it is hard to bet against Kyle Busch and that is why I made him my top choice. Bristol Motor Speedway is his playground no matter whether he is racing a Camping World Truck, Nationwide Series car or a Cup car. Kyle has five wins in Cup, four wins in Nationwide and three more in trucks. Everybody knows Kyle will do great and that is why his odds are depressed this weekend but he makes a sensible top choice.

If you dig through the statistics a little deeper you can find two hidden gems that are good betting options at Bristol. Brian Vickers’ average finish in Cup at Bristol is worse than 22nd but his last two races here in the 55 car have been top five finishes. While he lacks a trip to Victory Lane on his resume in Cup his 30-1 odds make him a good value.

Martin Truex Jr. has an outstanding record at both Bristol and at the other high banked cement track in Dover. Add to that equation a tempting 25-1 price and he is a wise bet this weekend too.

Good luck with your fantasy racing picks this week and don’t forget to send in your pick for “Whiteboard Fantasy Racing” this week for Bristol.

Fixing to Win – Fantasy Insight Las Vegas

Greg Biffle

There are many wild systems that people use to win in Las Vegas. Roulette players swear you always win on black. Blackjack players always double down on eleven. Baccarat players always fold when James Bond looks confident. Poker players never count their money while they’re sitting at the table there is time enough for counting when the dealing’s done. OK so maybe quoting Kenny Rogers lyrics is a bit of a reach but you get the idea. When it comes to picking a NASCAR winner there is one sure fire method to use if you are fixing to win.

Everybody knows the only legitimate sport in the USA worth gambling on is professional wrestling! Look at how many NBA games end up going down to the last two minutes, those things are rigged. Look how often NFL games end up a ½ point either side of the betting line, which surely isn’t happening by coincidence. When it comes to NASCAR races it always pays to bet on the guy whose sponsor is paying for the race.

Last week all of the numbers were stacked against Carl Edwards except one. The Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix just happens to have Cousin Carl as the winner for the first time in nearly two years while sporting the Subway colors and you call that a coincidence? Maybe you need more convincing.

Look at Jimmie Johnson’s record at Charlotte Motor Speedway. From 1960 to 1998 just how many races did Johnson win at CMS? Zero! (Oh sure cover for NASCAR by saying that Johnson didn’t start racing until 2002 in Cup) Once they changed the name to Lowes Motor Speedway Johnson rattled off six wins. When they dropped the Lowes name how many races did he win? Zero! Are you starting to see a pattern?

You might call me a tin foil hat wearing black helicopter seeing NASCAR fan but you surely can’t dispute the numbers above! (Although I am a little light headed after shoveling those 8 inches of global warming that fell this week)

So grab a fresh roll of tin foil, pick Johnson as the winner and we will all collect some big money this weekend!

Good luck with your fantasy racing picks this week and don’t forget to send in your pick for “Whiteboard Fantasy Racing” this week for Las Vegas.
